Motor planning in AAC

What it is
Motor planning is the idea that a person who selects the same word from the same position enough times stops searching for it and simply reaches. A touch typist doesn't think about where the keys are; a fluent AAC user doesn't think about where "want" is. The word becomes a movement, and movements are fast, automatic and available even when attention or vision is not.
The principle underlies every good AAC design. It is also the reason moving a single cell on a person's device is a bigger deal than it looks.
Who it can help
Everyone who uses a grid, and especially people who struggle with visual search: those with a visual impairment, with attention differences, or with the effort of scanning a busy screen. Autistic people, who often learn motor patterns readily, do particularly well with consistent layouts, and LAMP, Language Acquisition through Motor Planning, is a whole approach built on that, using page sets where every word has one fixed motor path from the home page.
It cuts both ways. A layout that is consistent but badly designed still gets learned, so mistakes in the first month become habits. And someone who is moved from one device or page set to another loses their plans and starts again, which is why switching should be rare and deliberate.
How it works
Consistency has three parts. The same word in the same cell, always. The same path to it: on a dynamic display, "drink" is always home, then the same folder, then the same cell, never sometimes one route and sometimes another. And no reorganisation as the vocabulary grows: a good page set hides cells that aren't in use yet and reveals them in place, so a 20-cell beginner grid becomes a 60-cell grid without any word moving.
Over weeks, the person's selections speed up and their gaze stops leading their hand. That is the sign it is working. It is also why a static display and a core board are so powerful for beginners: nothing ever moves.
Getting started
Freeze the layout. Agree with everyone who edits the device that nothing existing moves; new words go into empty cells or new pages.
If the grid needs to grow, grow it by revealing hidden cells rather than by switching to a bigger grid with a different arrangement, and ask the speech and language therapist whether the page set supports that.
Match the paper backup to the screen. The low-tech backup should be a print of the device's home page, so the motor plan carries over when the battery dies.
